The streams form their own pools of varying sizes as they flow, and sometimes the rocks shift to form different pools. Anglers should be aware of their surroundings when fishing these streams.
Six hours due north of Davenport, Iowa, is the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in Wisconsin. There are even a few trees in this forest that are thousands of years old, but they are extremely limited in number because of 20th-century logging. The forest is best to visit in the wintertime. Despite the bitter cold, the paths through the forest become wonderful for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. You can ice fish on the larger streams and lakes within the forest, too, and go for muskies, trout, bass, and walleye.
Indiana Dunes National Park is 197 miles from Davenport, Iowa. The park stretches for more than 15 miles along Lake Michigan, and the dunes there rise a couple of hundred feet. The hiking through the dunes provides you with gorgeous views of the lake. More than 50 miles of trails snake their way through the dunes. These trails vary in difficulty, but none of them is supremely difficult. The toughest two are the Mount Baldy Beach Trail and the Cowles Bog Trail.
It's 266 miles to the Gateway Arch National Park in St. Louis. The famous arch rises 630 feet, and interestingly enough, it also spans 630 feet. In 1804, the site of the arch was the stepping-off point for Lewis and Clark on their famous mission together. Unlike most national parks, this one is directly in the city. Shops, restaurants, and many other sights of St. Louis are mere steps away.
The Effigy Mounds National Monument is a sacred ground to 29 First Nations. The park is 144 miles from Davenport. The mounds resemble many of the spirit animals of the First Nations: bison, raven, bear, lynx, turtle, panther, and others. There are 206 of them. The hiking in and near the park is of moderate difficulty. You can book a river cruise within the park, and these cruises last about 90 minutes.
