The inhabited history of the Crystal River, Florida area dates back thousands of years. Dating back 2,500 years, the first settlers, which we call the Deptford culture, built structures. During the turn of the century, this part of the state became a major producer in the turpentine industry, which was shipped by rail and sent around the world by sea.

In 1903, Crystal River was officially named a town. It was incorporated as a city 20 years later, in 1923. The city also has a burgeoning history scene, with locations like the Floral City Heritage Museum and The Coastal Heritage Museum drawing in many yearly visitors.
