While Brownwood was initially settled on the east side of the Pecan Bayou, a land dispute caused settlers to move to the west side of the bayou. Brown County Rodeo – Guess if the cowboys and cowgirls or the animals will come out ahead during this four-day festival held at the Brown County Rodeo Grounds in early June.
Only 22 miles from Brownwood, Lake Brownwood State Park is a great place to spend a day playing on the water. The lake, over 4,400 acres in size, is a great place to fish, boat, and water ski. Some of the numerous hiking trails lead to historic buildings constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.
Colorado Bend State Park is a fantastic place for a paddling adventure on the Colorado River. Consider taking a hike to see Gorman Falls, a 70-foot spring-fed waterfall. Park rangers often lead group hiking tours, and wild cave tours are sometimes available.
Do not forget your swimsuit when you go to Abilene State Park. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the swimming pool in the 1930s, and you will love swimming in it. Lake Abilene and Buffalo Wallow Pond are terrific places to fish. Canoes and kayaks are available to rent.
While you can find many great landmarks in Texas, there are at least three within 100 miles of Brownwood that you shouldn't miss. The Harvey House at the Santa Fe Depot was constructed in 1903 and served as a restaurant for many years. Head upstairs in this home to learn more about how restaurants have changed over time and learn more about the uniforms worn by the waitstaff.
Pat Coursey Park is the perfect place to take a break in downtown Brownwood. This park, constructed in 2003, has a large star on the ground representing those veterans from Brown County who didn't come home. You will love seeing the artificial waterfall and the mural showcasing Brownwood's past.
The Taylor County History Center in Buffalo Gap, Texas is another great spot to visit. This center is home to historic buildings and artwork that display the lifestyle of people in this part of the Big Country between 1880 and 1920.
