First opened to the public in 1934, Abilene State Park was completed as part of a Civilian Conservation Corps project. Today, visitors still enjoy heading to the park on a hot summer day to swim in the historic 1930s swimming pool. This state park, which is located about 20 miles south of Abilene, Texas, also offers other outdoor activities, including fishing in Lake Abilene or Buffalo Wallow Pond. This is also a favorite place for kayaking and canoeing, bike riding, and hiking. While the main hiking trail is short, you can stroll along it slowly to see a wide variety of wildlife. During your stay at the park, you can also find plenty to do in the surrounding Texas communities of Abilene, Tuscola and Buffalo Gap.

Abilene State Park
From Abilene, Texas, take US Highway 84 West. Veer a slight right onto US 83. When you reach Tuscola, Texas, get on Ranch Road 613. Turn left on Ranch Road 275 and left again on FM 89 W. You will see the park on your left.
