The town of Stephenville was named after John M. Stephen. He settled in the area in the mid-1850s and was the one who donated the land for the townsite. The town was laid out in 1856 by George B. Erath, and within two years, the population was 776. The population would decline after that, but Stephenville would begin growing again in the 1870s. During that time, it became an agriculture and livestock center for the region. In 1886, coal mining began to gain popularity in the area, and it would be a major part of Stephenville's economy for several decades. The Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railroad arrived in the area in 1889, and Stephenville was officially incorporated the same year.
