The Honeycomb Buttes WSA is located near the town of Rock Springs in southwestern Wyoming. The area, which is part of the desert badlands ecosystem, is home to beautiful rock formations, gorgeous landscapes, and a range of diverse plant and animal life. Visitors can hike, camp, rock climb, horseback ride, or enjoy many photography opportunities. The location is remote enough that visitors are nearly guaranteed a private outdoor adventure that feels far from any sort of human habitation.

Located in the Sand Dunes Wilderness Study Area, this gorgeous trail offers beautiful views of the area’s unique geological features.

Hikers can choose to hike a section of this trail or enjoy the beautiful scenery by camping or backpacking along the way.

Amethyst Lake Trail

This trail offers beautiful views and provides access to excellent fishing locations.

Naturalist Basin Trail

Located in the nearby High Uintas Wilderness, this trail is a great option for a day trip or a longer backpacking excursion.

Kermsuh Lake Trail

This trail provides stunning views of the landscape and is ideal for spotting wildlife.

Fishing and BoatingFishing and Boating

The nearby Green River, which can be accessed in the Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge, is an excellent place for fishing enthusiasts to catch salmon, trout, mountain whitefish, and catfish. The river is also great for rafting. Anglers can also fish or boat at Big Sandy Reservoir. The Flaming Gorge Reservoir is also a good option for boating or catching trout, catfish, burbot, salmon, and smallmouth bass.

There are many bouldering options within the Honeycomb Buttes WSA itself. The nearby North Table Mountain also offers 12 traditional climbs of varying difficulty, and there are nine traditional and sport routes at the Natural Corrals Superior climbing location.

Wildlife ViewingWildlife Viewing

The Honeycomb Buttes WSA offers some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the area. Elk, bobcats, and even mountain lions are relatively common sights, and the many caves in the buttes make great homes for different bat species. The area is also home to great horned owls. Visitors can also head to the nearby High Uintas Wilderness to see other wildlife.

Picnicking

The Pioneer Trails Picnic Grounds is one of the best locations for a picnic near the Honeycomb Buttes WSA. The area spans 52 acres and offers 20 picnic tables, restrooms, playgrounds, and easy access to hiking trails. The Sweetwater County Picnic Grounds offers 35 tables and four group picnic shelters. There is also a nearby boat ramp that provides access to the Green River.

BLM RV camping can be enjoyed at the Firehole Canyon Campground. This beautiful campground is located near the Flaming Gorge Reservoir in the Flaming Gorge Recreation Area. There are picnic tables, water, and restrooms, and a dump station can be found on-site. The Green River RV Park is also a great option, and this campground offers full hookups and daily, weekly, and monthly rates. The Rock Springs/Green River KOA offers large RV sites, including pull-thru sites with full or partial hookups.

Visitors to the Honeycomb Buttes WSA can enjoy Bureau of Land Management free camping in the wilderness itself or throughout most of the nearby Ashley and Medicine Bow National Forests. Campers can set up a dispersed site. There are no amenities, so pack anything you might need.

Planning your Honeycomb Buttes WSA BLM trip

Because the Honeycomb Buttes WSA is so remote, the roads around the area can become quite rough. You may need a four-wheel-drive or all-terrain vehicle to enter the area. The roads near the area are not always clearly marked, so carry a map and compass or a GPS to help you find your way. Once you enter the area, motorized vehicles are prohibited. 

Temperatures in the Honeycomb Buttes WSA rarely exceed 90 degrees in the summer, making those months the most popular choice for visiting the area. During the spring, fall, and winter, temperatures can be very cold, and the area often sees snowfall. The weather can change suddenly, so always check the forecast before you leave. Because the area is so remote, it’s also a good idea to pack plenty of supplies, water, and a first aid kit, and it can be helpful to bring warm clothes in case of a drop in temperature.

Bureau of Land Management campgrounds and wilderness study areas like the Honeycomb Buttes WSA require special care, and using Leave No Trace and Tread Lightly guidelines can help. Always stay on trails as much as possible, and do what you can to minimize your impact on the land. If you plan to start a fire, build it in a designated pit or ring and keep it under control. Throw away all trash, and if there are no trash cans available, pack out trash. Be polite to other visitors, and share common areas. If you plan to set up a dispersed camping site, choose an area that has stable ground and little vegetation.

From Rock Springs, take the US-191 north for about 36 miles. Turn right onto WY-28 E and continue for about 45 miles. Turn right onto Winter Road, and continue on Winter Road until it turns into Pickaxe Road. Take a slight right onto Riverview Cutoff, and then continue until you reach the WSA.
