Newberry Mountains Wilderness

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for 1 in every 10 acres of land in the U.S.

The Newberry Mountains Wilderness spans about 26,102 acres of land in Southern California. The mountain range itself is volcanic in origin, with broad, flat tops up to 5,100 feet high. Winding, mazelike canyons can be found throughout the entire area. Just outside of the wilderness' western border, you'll find the historic Azucar Mine. Traces of mining activity are present in and around the mine. You'll also often see gorgeous wildflower blooms after the spring rains in this area. This site is administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), a federal agency whose mission is to sustain the country's ecological health and diversity.

Joshua Tree National Park is 127 miles south while the edge of Death Valley National Park is 82 miles north. The Newberry Mountains Wilderness runs along Interstate 40, which gives you access to several towns, including the major city of Barstow. San Bernardino, home to 222,101 people just outside of Los Angeles, is 86 miles away.

Local anglers regularly stop by to catch catfish, bluegill, and bass. There are also several wild trout streams perfect for fly-fishing all year long.

ClimbingClimbing

New Jack City is a high-desert crag with various sport climbing and bouldering routes. The volcanic rock here allows for a variety of holds like underclings and crimps. There are also a few dispersed and established camping spots and a nearby bathroom. You'll find more great climbing opportunities at Peace on Deep Creek, Newberry Calm, and Harvard Hill.

Wildlife ViewingWildlife Viewing

You'll likely find raccoons, opossums, peacocks, coyotes, eagles, and ground squirrels in forested areas. Herds of bighorn sheep are often spotted in alpine meadows or the foothills of rugged mountains. Grab a pair of binoculars to catch a glimpse of the local goldfinches, bluebirds, falcons, doves, hummingbirds, and titmice.

Picnicking

You won't find many established picnicking spots inside the Newberry Mountains Wilderness outside of dispersed campsites. You can instead head over to the Sawtooth Mountains Wilderness to use the local campground's tables, fire rings, and bathrooms. You're also welcome to take your meals while you’re hiking, fishing, or viewing the wildlife.

ATVing

Bringing an off-roading vehicle is a great way to conserve your energy and haul more essentials. Easily make your way across the landscape while enjoying the breathtaking views of the California wilderness. It's important to note that while ATVs are permitted in the desert around the Newberry Mountains Wilderness, the wilderness area itself is closed to most motorized equipment unless otherwise designated.

Planning your Newberry Mountains Wilderness BLM trip

California summers can reach dangerous highs, especially when you're out in the desert with minimal shade and protection. Plan most of your hikes and excursions at the start of the day so that you can head back to your campsite when the sun reaches its peak. Bring several extra gallons of water as well as heavy-duty sunscreen. Opt for wide-brim hats that cover your face and neck. Take plenty of long breaks in shaded areas. It’s vital to know the symptoms of heat stroke before you start your trip. Additionally, always check the forecast before heading out on your hike or climbing adventure.

Leave No Trace Leaf

All California BLM visitors are expected to follow the seven Leave No Trace principles. Always plan for your trip, so you're prepared for local hazards and emergencies. Travel and camp on durable surfaces. Leave all plant life and artifacts where you find them. Be courteous of local wildlife and visitors. Pack out all of your trash and food waste and minimize the impact of your campfires. These principles can vary based on the environment you're exploring.
