If you are visiting Mission for the first time, you may not know exactly what to expect. Because of its proximity, Mission is considered part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. While Mission is an incorporated city of its own, it is just a short drive from Kansas City, the booming destination across the Missouri border. Although Mission is often seen as a town to travel through, it has a great history of its own.
The city of Mission was first occupied by Kansas, Shawnee, and Osage Indian tribes. Over time, the Indian reservation opened its borders and allowed other settlers to make their homes there. At its roots, Mission was a spot along a wagon trail from New Mexico. Over time, people traveling the trail began settling in Mission and calling it home. By the mid-1930s, the town was becoming more of a centralized hub and included a drug store and restaurant.
The town grew and became incorporated as its own city in 1951. Today, Mission has a population of about 10,330. Mission remains an excellent spot for tourists and travelers alike. In terms of dining, visitors can sample a surprising range of ethnic food, including Japanese, Mediterranean, Mexican, and Thai, as well as American favorites. Visitors hoping to spend more time outdoors can enjoy picnics at local parks. Broadmoor Park is an excellent spot for picnicking and has a covered area to keep rain or UV rays at bay.
Other outdoor activities in the area seem endless, including great locations for hiking and mountain biking. Swope Park Mountain Bike Trailhead and Rock Creek Trail are both located in Mission. While there are no water sports within the city lines, water activities are available less than 30 minutes away on the Kansas River.
