Explore Lakewood, New Jersey in an RVshare RV Rental

Some of the first Europeans to settle present-day Lakewood were a group of brothers named George, Henry, and John Skidmore. In 1789, they constructed a sawmill that would serve as a major income source. Pretty soon, the community known as Three Partners Mill would begin to attract more settlers. This new group of settlers included Jesse Richards, who is credited with organizing the town’s first postal service and helping to establish a blast furnace. After the blast furnace was constructed in 1814, the town’s name was changed to Washington’s Furnace. Around the year 1880, there was a push to find a more suitable name for the community. Citizens voted unanimously for the name Lakewood. Today, this thriving township which once had just 200 inhabitants has now grown to well over 100,000 residents.

Check out a performance at the historic Strand Theater. Built in 1922, this neo-classical theater was previously used to host silent films and vaudevilles. Tour the Allaire Village, a living history museum that was once used as a Native American ceremonial ground. The village was also the location of a 1750s sawmill and the Monmouth Furnace which was constructed during the early 1800s.

Due to its large Jewish population, Lakewood Township features a host of kosher restaurant options. These restaurants include Circa Restaurant Lakewood, Entree’, Mentoast by Keepshuto, The Upper Crust, and Pita Hut. If you have a taste for a smoked meat dish, stop by The Southside Smokehouse. Menu items include hot turkey breast sandwiches, marinated grilled chicken, smoked brisket, and smoked pastrami.
