Kokomo is a city located in north-central Indiana. The population was 46,113 at the 2010 census. Kokomo is the county seat of Howard County. It is home to Indiana University Kokomo and Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana. The city is also the site of the Kokomo opalescent glass factory. The name "Kokomo" comes from the Miami tribe's word meaning "black shoe." The first non-native settlers to the area arrived in 1820 and were known as Kokomo. In 1855, Kokomo was incorporated as a city with just over 1,000 people. The mid-19th century saw a boom in the city's population and economic growth due mainly to the discovery of titanium deposits in 1856 and the subsequent establishment of several steel-related manufacturing businesses. By 1900, Kokomo had a population of almost 17,000 and was one of the largest cities in Indiana.

The early 20th century was marked by continued economic growth and further expansion of the industry. A notable event during this period was the development of the "Dyno" process for making high-strength steel by Elwood Haynes in 1913. This innovation helped make Kokomo an essential center for auto production during the 1920s and 1930s; Chrysler and General Motors both had auto plants in Kokomo during this period. Unfortunately, like much of the country, Kokomo was hit hard by the Great Depression during the 1930s. Many businesses closed their doors, and unemployment reached an all-time high. However, World War II brought new opportunities to Kokomo, as several war-related industries set up shops in the city and employed thousands of workers.

If you love history, explore Seiberling Mansion and the Howard County Museum. Seiberling Mansion, built in 1889 and located on the east side of Kokomo, is a Victorian-style home that was once the home of Monroe Seiberling, founder of the Kokomo opalescent glass factory. The Howard County Museum is located in downtown Kokomo and features exhibits that explore the area's history from prehistoric times to the present day.
