The first European settlers arrived in the Kent area in the 1850s along the banks of the White River. The first settler was a man named Samuel Russell, who claimed a plot of land in the area in 1853. Soon after, several other settlers followed Russell into the area and claimed plots of their own. At first, the settlement was called "White River," and then later called "Titusville" after an early settler named James Henry Titus. In 1889, Titusville was renamed after the County of Kent in England, and Kent, Washington was officially incorporated on May 28, 1890. Kent was only the second city incorporated in King County, with Seattle being the first. At the time, the city had a population of 793.
