Explore Fredericksburg, Texas, in an RVshare RV Rental

The history of Fredericksburg, Texas, began on May 8, 1846, when 120 German immigrants arrived. These immigrants were part of the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas. The leader, John O. Meusebach, chose a spot four miles north of the Pedernales River. At first, the settlement was called Friedrichsburg to honor Prince Frederick of Prussia, but it was later renamed Fredericksburg. Meusebach was also responsible for reaching a compromise between the Comanche and the town folks who moved into the area.

The first privately owned store and hotel were established within a few years of this time. Religion was one of these German immigrants' most vital aspects of life. Some farmers would travel over twenty miles to attend church on Sundays and other holidays. The Vereins Kirche was built to meet the religious needs of the community and soon became the hub of the town. This building brought together people from all over the county, serving as a spiritual center, community center, and school. By 1877, the city got its first stand-alone school, post office, and newspaper.

Fredericksburg would get its first electric company in 1896. In 1913, the Northern Railway made its way to the area. The community grew as the railroad brought supplies and people to the county. The first census in 1930 stated that Fredericksburg had a population of 2,416.

Today, the population of Fredericksburg is just under 12,000. The town offers a variety of activities. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is a popular spot for locals. Other activities near Fredericksburg include Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, Fredericksburg Skate Park, Cross Mountain Park, National Museum of the Pacific War, and the Pioneer Museum.
