Located in Florence, this cemetery has a rich history that goes back to the 17 century during the American Civil War. At that time, Florence was used as a prison where two thousand prisoners of war were incarcerated. Due to poor living conditions, which were accelerated by overcrowding, poor sanitation, poor healthcare and lack of adequate food, most of them died. The mass deaths resulted in the formation of the Florence National Cemetery after the war, where the dead prisoners of war were buried. There are sad stories looming over this cemetery, including that of a woman who was caught during the war in male apparel. She pretended to be a man so that she could fight beside her husband, who was serving as a captain. She died in Florence serving her time as a nurse at the Florence Prisoner of War camp and was buried at this cemetery. Although it exudes a sad atmosphere, the Florence National Cemetery is a must visit for history buffs and those who want to learn more about that particular period of time.
