On April 12, 1861, the first shots of the Civil War were fired when the newly formed Confederate army bombarded Union troops on an island off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. Today, the island and another mainland fort make up the Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park.   • Fort Sumter Beach Trail

    If you have time before your return ferry after your visit to Fort Sumter, head down the Fort Sumter Beach Trail. Located outside the fort walls, it leads to a small beach on the side of the island. The path is short and easy, but it offers another view of the fort wall.

  • Fort Moultrie Trails

    Although there are no designated hiking routes at Fort Moultrie, a network of walking paths offers access to the grounds. For the best views of the fort and the water, take the well-maintained route that travels around the outer edge. Three smaller dirt trails lead down to the water, where you can look out over to Fort Sumter. Head east along the beach, and it's possible to walk all the way down to the public beach. Another trail leads over to Battery Jasper, which sits a short distance from the main fort grounds.

  • Fort Moultrie

    Located on Sullivan's Island, Fort Moultrie has been an important U.S. military location since 1776. Today, you can explore the grounds, learn about the torpedo storehouse, and check out the different structures and cannons. The fort also includes multiple batteries and educational exhibits.

    Fort Sumter sits on an island at the mouth of Charleston Bay. From this crucial defense standpoint, it played an important role in a variety of conflicts throughout the centuries. How To Get To Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park

To get to Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park, take I-526 or I-26 to US-17. Get on SC-703, and drive out to Sullivan's Island. Once you're in town, you can head west on Middle Street to reach Fort Moultrie. Fort Sumter is located on an island off the coast; you can take a boat from Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum on the eastern side of the Charleston Harbor or from Liberty Square Visitor Education Center on the western side.
