Swedish trapper Joe Whitford named Fergus Falls after his boss James Fergus, although it is unclear if Fergus ever visited the community. Fergus ended up being dissuaded by a friend from moving to this remote area, and he chose to move to Wyoming instead, becoming a wealthy rancher. Whitford, meanwhile, was killed in the Dakota Wars.
