Explore Fergus Falls, Minnesota, in an RVshare RV Rental

Swedish trapper Joe Whitford named Fergus Falls after his boss James Fergus, although it is unclear if Fergus ever visited the community. Fergus ended up being dissuaded by a friend from moving to this remote area, and he chose to move to Wyoming instead, becoming a wealthy rancher. Whitford, meanwhile, was killed in the Dakota Wars. St. Cloud resident George B. Wright found the lapsed claim shortly after the Civil War and worked with his business partner R.J. Mendenhall to lay out the city’s lots and streets. In 1872, the railroad arrived, and the town multiplied because settlers were promised that wheat would grow very well in the fertile land next to the river. A tornado almost destroyed the town in 1919. You can learn more about the cities past by visiting the Otter Tail County Museum.

Fergus Falls has about 13,000 residents, and many activities center around outdoor living. Consider taking a drive along the 150-mile-long looped Otter Trail Scenic Byway. This trail runs beside Maplewood State Park and Glendalough State Park, providing the perfect opportunity to stop and explore both parks. Stop and see the historic flour mill and the numerous lakes. The mill was constructed in 1889 and was highly successful until about 1919. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Another fantastic place to explore near Fergus Falls is the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center. This 325-acre facility is a great place to go hiking, and it hosts educational classes for various ages throughout the year, so be sure to check their calendar. It is also a great place to explore natural history in the interpretative center.

Pebble Lake Beach is a terrific spot to go swimming in the summer. The 55-mile long Central Lakes Trail runs through town, providing an excellent place to go hiking. The trail runs between Fergus Falls and Osakis, Minnesota, following abandoned train tracks passing through 10 different communities. Mountain biking enthusiasts will want to go to Ferber Park, where they will find a tree- and rock-covered glacial moraine with many steep hills. Ferber Park is also a delightful place to go hiking, with a great trail outlined with wildflowers to follow in the summertime. Once the snow starts falling, there are several snowmobile corridors in this area. These corridors often run around the small local lakes and are usually not groomed. Dragoon Park has a campground and a 27-hole disc golf course, and Roosevelt Park is a fantastic place to go skateboarding. There are numerous outstanding golf courses in this area, including Pebble Lake Golf Course in Fergus Falls. This 72-par 18-hole course measures 6,780 yards. Many players find staying out of the five sets of trees on this course challenging.
