The first known inhabitants of the area now called Toronto were the Sioux Indians. The French later occupied the area in the early 1800s. Pioneers then settled in the region in the mid-1800s. The first settlement in Toronto was made in the spring of 1879 when a group of men from Sioux City built a log cabin near the present site of the city.
Other settlers soon followed, and by the summer of 1879, about fifty people were living in the area. The first post office in Toronto was established in September 1879. The town was initially named Fort Pierre, but it was later renamed Toronto after the capital of Canada because a majority of its settlers were from the nation. The town was incorporated in 1881.
Today, the area measures about 0.31 square miles with a population of just over 200. Despite its small size and population, Toronto has many extraordinary places and activities worth visiting.
