Explore Ennis, Texas in an RVshare RV Rental

Ennis was established in 1871 when the Houston and Texas Central Railroad trustees purchased land to create their northern endpoint. At a cost of just $5 per acre, the City of Ennis was a bargain. It was named for Cornelius Ennis, an official of the railroad line. He also served as the mayor of Houston from 1856 to 1857.

The first post office in Ennis was opened in 1872, and the first newspaper, the Evening Argus, was established in 1873. By the 1890s, Ennis was home to all essential businesses, including a brickyard and a second newspaper. The City of Ennis and the Houston and Texas Central Railroad agreed that the railroad yards and machine shops would remain in the city of Ennis as long as the city provided water to the railroad. The second railroad, Texas Midland, arrived in 1894.

Over the years, the Houston and Texas Central Railroad was the heart of Ennis' development as a commercial, agricultural, and industrial center. It soon became known as the spot where the railroads met the cotton fields. In 1920, 152,601 bales of cotton were ginned in the county, which was the most in any county in America.

With a population of over 21,000 today, Ennis sits on the edge of the Blackland prairie region of Texas. Visitors come to Ennis in early March to experience the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails. Other famous spots include the Texas Motorplex, Sugar Ridge Winery, Ennis Railroad and Cultural Heritage Museum, and Highview Marina.
