The settlement that would become Corvallis got started after a settler named Joseph C. Avery arrived in the area in 1845. He took out a land claim and built a log cabin for his home. Shortly after Avery arrived, other settlers began to build their homes in the area along the Willamette River. In 1849, Avery opened a store and surveyed a town site on his land. The new town was called Marysville, but the name was changed to Corvallis in December of 1853. Corvallis was officially incorporated as a city on January 29, 1857.
