Explore Conroe, Texas in an RVshare RV Rental

Conroe, Texas sits on Interstate Highway 45 at the junction of the Burlington Santa Fe and Union Pacific Railroads, seven miles southeast of Lake Conroe. The city was established after the Civil War when a retired Illinois captain, Isaac Conroe, came to Texas in hopes of making his mark in the lumber industry. In 1881, he positioned his sawmill on Stewarts Creek two miles east of the International-Great Northern Railroad's Houston-Crocket line. He soon transferred his operations down the tracks to the rail junction, a perfect spot with vast pine forests for lumber supply, helping his business flourish.

When in Conroe, you have the chance to follow in the founder's footsteps. Just three blocks from the Montgomery County Courthouse in the heart of downtown, you will find Isaac Conroe's home, which was built in 1885. By 1892, the community was a shipping center for livestock, lumber, bricks, and cotton. Conroe briefly shipped local tobacco during the late-19th and early-20th centuries.

In the 1930s, the Great Depression hit caused a heavy blow to the country. However, when George W. Strake struck oil in December 1931, it inspired local entrepreneurs to seek their fortune. Built in 1934, the Crighton Theatre offered 50-cent movie admission and air conditioning, a popular place during hot summer days. Today, you can still see theatrical productions at the storied playhouse. The Corner Pub is an excellent place for a night of live music and dancing.
