The sub-region of Deep East Texas is composed of 12 wonderful counties that include Angelina, Houston, Jasper, Nacogdoches, Newton, Polk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, Shelby, Trinity, and Tyler. It is called Deep East because its location is "deeper" or within the father south, and towards the Gulf Coast than the rest of East Texas. Moreover, it is also said that the cultural and social characteristics of the area tends to be another reason for it to be called Deep. Nacogdoches and San Augustine, two of the oldest towns in Texas belong to this sub-region. Deep East Texas covers an area of 9,790 square miles and has a usually humid subtropical climate but occasionally replaced by intrusions of cold air from the North.
