Colfax, Louisiana is the county seat of Grant Parish. Officials formed the parish on March 4, 1869, and they named it after Ulysses Grant. Hot Springs National Park is about 248 miles north of Colfax. The government first protected the 5,550 acres in this park in 1832 as Hot Springs Reservation, but it did not become a national park until 1921. The government recognized it as a National Historic Landmark District in 1987. There are two monuments in the small town of Colfax, and both pay homage to the Colfax Massacre, often called the Colfax Riot. The city cemetery has a large white obelisk commemorating the three white men who died during the massacre "fighting for white supremacy," while the small plaque on the courthouse lawn pays tribute to the people of color who died during the takeover on Easter Sunday, 1873. Between 62-153 Black militia men were killed as they surrendered to a mob of former Confederate soldiers and members of the Ku Klux Klan. Many historians have described the day as the deadliest day during the Reconstruction Era.
