Explore Akron, Ohio, in an RVshare RV Rental

Akron began as a small settlement in 1811. The town expanded to include the summit above the nearby developing Ohio and Erie Canal. It was formally founded in 1825 and developed into two separate north and south factions. These different areas merged in 1839 when the town was incorporated into a village. Akron was finally incorporated into a city in 1865. Beginning in the late 1800s, Akron began producing a lot of rubber, which was used to make toys, jugs, balloons, and more. The city was producing so much of this material that it became known as the Rubber Capital of the World. Due to this reputation, four major tire companies set up headquarters in the area. While most of these companies moved away, the prominent Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company still calls Akron home.

Today, Akron is known for its amazing research on polymers. The city has received the All-America City Award three times, largely due to the outstanding work completed at the University of Akron. Notable people from the area include professional basketball player LeBron James, poet Rita Dove and NASA astronaut Judith Resnik.

The Akron Art Museum has collected numerous works to fill its 20,000-square-foot gallery space since 1850. With both national and international collections, visitors can tour hundreds of years of works, including paintings, sculptures, and more.

Akron visitors should also check out the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail. This multi-use trail is currently 87 miles long but is being developed with the intention to increase that length. When completed, you'll be able to bike, hike, or horseback ride from Cleveland all the way down to New Philadelphia.
