Sevier River

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for 1 in every 10 acres of land in the U.S.

The 400-mile-long Sevier River starts just west of Bryce Canyon National Park, at the confluence of the Minnie Creek and Tyler creeks, and runs north through Utah's spectacular Great Basin. Many recreationists access this river near Richfield, Utah as it meanders through the earth-toned walls of Sevier Canyon. It's a prime spot for fishing, hiking, and rafting. The trails and certain camping areas around this BLM site are managed by the federal Bureau of Land Management, which cares for nearly 22.8 million acres of public lands in Utah and many more across the country. Accessing the river at Sevier Canyon is easy because Utah State Highway runs down its west side. This river, the longest one entirely in Utah, ends at the salt-encrusted Sevier Lake. This part of the Sevier River is about 66 miles northwest of Capitol Reef National Park and about 175 miles west of both Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park.

Planning your Sevier River BLM trip

This area is prone to flash flooding when heavy rain falls quickly, usually between mid-July and mid-September, so be prepared to relocate your campsite if needed. If heavy rain falls at higher elevations, it can drain down into the river. If you see the water level rising rapidly, especially if it looks muddy, move to higher elevations immediately. Camping in Bureau of Land Management campgrounds helps save money, so you might want to do a search for "BLM camping near me" wherever you roam.
