Deep Creek Mountains

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for 1 in every 10 acres of land in the U.S.

The Deep Creek Mountains are on federally managed property with free public access, like all Bureau of Land Management (BLM) sites. To the east, the Great Salt Lake Desert borders this scenic BLM site, and the Deep Creek Valley lies to the west. Thanks to their distance from major population centers, solitude is not hard to find in the Deeps. The Bureau of Land Management permits camping in the area, although the roads are rough. Fortunately, there is an abundance of recreational opportunities around here, including hunting. Whether you want to hike or rock climb, it can be done at the Deeps.

It is only 55 miles to the south of Wendover, Utah. In addition, the Gandy Mountain Caves are nearby, as is Humboldt National Forest. Also, the Pony Express National Historic Trail/National Backcountry Byway runs to the north and east. Finally, Great Basin National Park is only 82 miles south of this WSA.

Ibapah Peak

The hike up to Ibapah Peak passes through some of the region's most inspiring vistas and is ranked hard. Overall, it travels through 14.4 miles of alpine tundra and desert biomes. In October, snow may still be seen along the northern and eastern slopes, so consider going in summer. However, it can become fairly steep at some points, so exercise caution while out and about.

ClimbingClimbing

Perfectly formed climbing rocks are scattered throughout the park's property boundaries. Double-top Red Mountain is across Granite Peak Pass from Ibadapah Peak. Haystack peak is an additional peak worth seeing while visiting the area. Since it is cold during the winter months, a summer expedition may be more comfortable.

Wildlife ViewingWildlife Viewing

Utah's native wildlife pervades the WSA's territory. Mule deer, elk, mountain lions, and bobcats are among the largest creatures native to the region. Several smaller animals are also common, including badgers and marmots. Visitors may notice multiple bird species while traveling, such as the golden eagle, screech owl, chukar partridge, and wild turkey.

Picnicking

Even though the park lacks picnicking facilities, you can set up your own picnic at the site. Simply find somewhere enticing when you have entered the park and pull over to eat. Organized picnic sites can be found in nearby towns, including Wendover. Most Bureau of Land Management campgrounds feature several picnic sites as well.

Considering the isolated location, light pollution is almost non-existent. Since artificial light is limited, the sky will appear lucid and bright. A comparable absence of light pollution is rare in the lower 48 states. Enjoy the night sky and Bureau of Land Management free camping simultaneously.

For anyone interested in RV camping, sites are located nearby. Nevertheless, there are not any RV-equipped sites within the park's limits. CCC Campground is only a few miles away and offers RV hookups. Similarly, Bates Family Ranch is within driving distance. However, hookups aren't currently available at the campground, so it's best suited for self-contained vehicles.

Dispersed camping is permitted anywhere inside the park, but you may need to rough it to get there. Since passage from most directions is over gravel roads, it may be easier to go by foot. Most cars will not survive the trip, and RVs may get stuck. Nonetheless, RV enthusiasts may stay for the night if they are comfortable boondocking. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so make sure to arrive as early as you can. To find BLM RV camping spots, search online for "BLM camping near me."

Planning your Deep Creek Mountains BLM trip

Always remember that RV camping sites are limited and may not be accessible in the winter. Usually, it would be best to reserve an official site at a campground in an urban area. Wendover is within 80 miles and has several options available for interested adventurers. If you decide to boondock at the Deep Creek Mountains, be prepared for a rural and rustic experience. Pack plenty of additional clothes and footwear. Temperatures may drop rapidly after the sun has set, so bring something warm for the night. Do not forget to take cookware, sunblock, and insect repellent.

BLM camping is a low-cost alternative to traditional campsites. Even if a nominal fee is charged, the experience will be less costly than it would be elsewhere. Plus, the campers will be friendly, so everyone can have a lot of fun. Before you head out on your trip, check out our blog for all you need to know about BLM camping.

Leave No Trace Leaf

The BLM requires travelers to Deep Creek Mountains and all other public sites to clean up after visiting. Otherwise, the area's pristine natural environment would be degraded by visitors' activities. Do not camp within 200 feet of the water, and remember to double-check for trash. Before leaving, throw away anything disposable and exit the park with it in hand. Be careful when viewing wildlife, as you are merely a visitor to their home. By adhering to these rules, you can contribute to a healthier environment.
