Located in the scenic mountains of southern West Virginia, Chief Logan State Park spans nearly 4,000 acres. In addition to hosting a wide range of recreational opportunities, one popular activity to enjoy in the park is a ranger-guided Elk Management Tour, where you can learn about how the park peacefully co-exists with these elusive and majestic mammals. Other amenities that bring both locals and visitors alike into the park include mini-golf, paved sporting courts, a playground, and a swimming pool. There's even a museum that hosts rotating exhibits from the West Virginia State Museum. Blackbear Campground
Blackbear Campground is a nearby RV park that provides a beautiful environment as well as affordable rates. You can look forward to laundry service, clean showers, and well-kept restrooms during a stay here. The pull-through sites are spacious and can accommodate RVs of any size. Paradise Island
Paradise Island is a fantastic RV park that offers full hookup sites and a unique rustic charm. The nightly rate for one to two people is $23, and it increases by $7 for each additional person. All sites come equipped with water, electricity, sewer, and a dump station. Some attractions available at the campground include a large gift shop, a playground, a volleyball court, a basketball court, and fire rings. What to Do at
Chief Logan State Park
Take time to visit the Chief Logan Museum, which is located within the park. This museum commemorates the life and legacy of the indigenous Mingo people and their leader, Chief Logan, who lived in the area around the time of the Revolutionary War. A C & O Kanawha class steam locomotive is also on permanent display at the park, shedding light on the area's history as part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroads. Plus, in addition to lots of opportunities to enjoy nature and the great outdoors, the park offers regularly scheduled special events and educational programs, including nature hikes, wildlife presentations, and even concerts. Inside Chief Logan State Park
The Liz Spurlock Amphitheater routinely hosts outdoor dramas, such as the historical "The Aracoma Story," during the summer months. Many visitors of the state park come to view wildlife such as red-shouldered hawks, black bears, wild boar, barred owls, bobcats, and various reptiles. The premises include an outdoor swimming pool and seven picnic areas, which are ideal spots for bird-watching and relaxation. You can pursue exciting recreational activities on the 18 miles of hiking trails or at the miniature golf course. The park also has the Chief Logan State Lodge Restaurant, which serves American food and is open for brunch and dinner.
Fishing
Chief Logan Lake is a 1,129-acre lake that is stocked with trout, catfish, and bass. You can either rent a boat or fish directly from the shoreline. Locals consider this lake to be one of the best fishing areas in the state.
Geocaching
There is at least one geocache hidden within the park. Download a geocaching app on your smartphone in advance, or bring a GPS unit to hunt for this hidden treasure during your visit. Once you find a cache, you can take a prize and sign the logbook. However, don't forget to bring a family-friendly item to leave in the container for the next treasure hunter.

The natural surroundings of the park include breathtaking views of dense forests, rolling hills, and tranquil scenic valleys.
Flora and Fauna
A diverse number of animals make their homes in and around the park, including black bears, bobcats, owls, red-shouldered hawks, wild boar, and lots of native reptiles. There are a number of species of flowers in Chief Logan State Park, including Dutchman's breeches, dwarf larkspur, and Indian paintbrush. You'll want to keep an eye out for the rare yellow lady's slipper and the endangered Guyandotte beauty, which is extremely rare and can be found along the park's Guyandotte Beauty Trail.
Hiking
There are 18 miles of trails to enjoy at the park. Some of the park's trails are short and easy, while others involve long uphill climbs, so there is something for hikers of all abilities to choose from. The Coal Mine Trail and the Lake Short Trail are particularly popular with hikers. Alternatively, the Guyandotte Beauty Trail is only one mile long and a good choice for hiking with the whole family.
Boating
If you don't bring your own, you can rent a boat on-site to explore the lake. There is a public boat launch available with parking nearby.
Swimming
There is a swimming pool that is open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and has water slides and a kiddie pool. Note that the entry fee for the pool is $6 per person.
Biking
Of the 18 miles of hiking trails located within the park, many of them are open to mountain biking as well. In addition, many people like to bike the park roads to get some exercise.
How to Get to
Chief Logan State Park
To get to Chief Logan State Park, head to the town of Logan, which is just about five miles south of the park. From Logan, take State Highway 10 North for just under four miles. Take a left on Little Buffalo Creek Road, and after about a mile, the park's entrance will be on your right.

There is no fee for entrance or parking at Chief Logan State Park. There are ample places for day-use parking near the pool and the boat launch.
