It is named after Philip Givhan, a significant ferry master on the Edisto River that operated Givhan's Ferry. Two major U.S. cities people travel from to reach Givhans Ferry State Park are Charleston, South Carolina, and Columbia, South Carolina. On the way from Charleston, start by following SC-61 N to Givhans Ferry Park Rd in Dorchester County. You will arrive at the destination after turning left onto Givhans Ferry Park Rd.

On the way from Columbia, start by taking Assembly St, and US-76 W to I-126 W. Follow I-26 E to Dorchester County and then take Exit 187 from I-26 E. Continue on SC-27 S. You will arrive at the destination after taking Ridge Rd/State Rd S-18-19 and County Rd S-18-30 to Givhans Ferry Park Rd.
