Long before Delaware State Park was founded, the Delaware tribe inhabited this dense beech-maple forest, giving the town, county, and park their names. In 1951, the US Army Corps of Engineers constructed a flood control dam to create Delaware Lake, which has become a hot spot for fishing and boating amid Ohio's fertile agricultural till plains. Dense woodlands and expansive meadows fill the park around the reservoir, creating a recreational paradise with hiking, biking, and nature watching. What to Do at
Delaware State Park
Along with your typical state park activities like fishing, hiking, and picnicking, Delaware State Park boasts a large variety of recreation. Throw some frisbees on the 27-hole disc golf course at Sweet Gum picnic area or the 9-hole course in the campground. Bring your four-legged companions for a swim in a designated dog area, or take them to the dog park to meet new friends and get some exercise. Nature watching is a popular hobby in the park, especially in one of the eight picnic areas in quiet, scenic spots overlooking the lake.
Take a boat out onto the lake and make some waves, stopping to cast your line for a prized catch. For registered campers, games and sporting equipment are available on loan from the campground office for basketball, volleyball, disc golf, and bicycling.
Inside Delaware State Park
There are many things inside the state park, starting with the five hiking trails that connect the lakeshore with the four campsite areas. You'll be able to observe the transecting meadows, wetlands, and woodland areas. After your long hike, take a dip in the 800-foot public beach swimming area or relax on the sandy beach and take in the rays. The huge reservoir features three boat ramps where visitors can launch a boat and try their luck at catching smallmouth bass, crappie, muskie, and largemouth bass. Wildlife watching, picnicking, cross-country skiing, and disc golf are few other activities inside the state park.
Fishing
Bait your hook and set out on the 1300-acre Delaware Reservoir in search of crappie, muskie, largemouth bass, and smallmouth bass. Fishing is good from both shore and boat. A small pond near the marina is specifically designated for kids 15 and under. All persons 16 and up must have a valid Ohio fishing license.
Geocaching
A GeoTrail winds you through the park with 12 caches along the way. Explore the trail to take in the wildlife, plant life, and all the park has to offer that you may not see otherwise.
Nature Watching
Birdwatching is popular at Delaware State Park with dozens of songbird species. A bluebird management trail attracts hundreds of nesting birds to the area.
Flora and Fauna
The area was harvested by loggers and settlers but now has a healthy second-growth forest. Woodlands and meadows spread through the park with plants and animals in abundant numbers. Trillium, wild blue phlox, Queen Anne's lace, and New England asters decorate the land. While exploring, you'll see fox squirrels, woodchucks, rabbits, and white-tailed deer. Ring-necked pheasants also make homes here, as do many waterfowl.
Hiking
Five hiking trails take you from the lake through meadows, woodlands, and wetlands. One of the trails carves a path along the dam. The trails are easy treks, ranging from less than a mile to 1.6 miles.
Boating
With no horsepower limit, you can bet Delaware Lake is a boater's paradise. Three boat launch ramps give you access to the water, and an accessible kayak and canoe launch sits at the Southwest launch area. You'll find boat rentals, overnight dock rentals, fuel, and fishing and boating supplies at the marina. Boat camping is permitted at the main marina and the Southwest docks. Life jacket loaner boards are available at the main marina and Southwest docks as well.
Swimming
An 800-foot public beach sits on the reservoir's shore. Nearby, you'll find a picnic pavilion, playground, and modern restrooms. Two boat and swim areas are designated on the lake. Pets are not permitted on the public beach.
Biking
Bicycles are available for rent to get you around the paved pathways at the park.
How to Get to
Delaware State Park
Delaware State Park is located a few miles north of Delaware on Highway 23. From Columbus, the park is less than an hour drive north.
Entering Delaware State Park
Parking is available in many areas of the park, including the main entrance, beach, marina, and boat ramps. There is some additional parking in the campground for registered guests. As with all Ohio state parks, there is no entrance fee to enjoy Delaware State Park.

Frequently Asked Questions About Delaware State Park
For boating, fishing, and other warm-weather outdoor recreation, late spring through early fall give you the best temperatures to be outside enjoying nature. In the fall, autumn colors provide a vibrant canvas over the area, perfect for photography. If you love colder weather, you can enjoy cross-country skiing, sledding, and ice fishing at the park.
White-tailed deer, fox squirrels, woodchucks, rabbits, pheasants, waterfowl, and songbirds all call the park home. You may also see turtles and frogs along the shoreline.
There are more than 200 camping with electrical hookups suitable for RVs at the park suitable for RV camping. Each site has a fire ring, picnic table, and restrooms nearby.
Reservations in the campground are required before your stay and can be made online or by phone up to six months in advance. Campsites range from $27 to $31 per night.
Pets are welcome in designated areas of Delaware State Park. All campsites are pet-friendly, and a fenced dog park and swim area are available near the public beach. A separate fenced dog park is located near the campground. Pets are not permitted on the public beach.
