You won't find crowds or amenities here; the closest town is tiny Fort Bragg, 19 miles south, and Sacramento and San Francisco lie about 200 miles away. As you're packing for a trip, prepare for conditions that can swing from hot and sunny to cold and windy in the space of an hour. In most cases, the coastal temperatures are cool, so wearing a warm layer is a must.

There are three campgrounds within the beach boundaries, each perched on the bluffs. Grab a site on the western edge for the best sunset views; no matter where you park, you'll be able to fall asleep to the sound of the surf. Sites here are all primitive with no hookups or dump station access, so it's important to prepare accordingly. Keep in mind that these campgrounds offer sites on a first-come, first-served basis. Expect a nightly fee starting at $35.
Westport Beach RV Park and Campground
Looking for RV sites with full hookups? The closest option to Westport-Union Landing State Beach is Westport Beach RV Park and Campground, which lies just to the south. Here, you can choose sites with views of the ocean or Wages Creek; primitive sites are also available. Limited Wi-Fi service is available, and you'll also have access to a store, coin-operated showers and a dump station. The park is ideal for families thanks to the on-site playground, volleyball courts and private beach. Premium sites with full hookups start at $70 for two people while standard full-hookup sites are $62 for two people. The park charges an extra $7 per night for each additional adult and $5 per night for each child. Pets are allowed for a $2-per-night surcharge. If you're visiting in the winter, you'll get a great deal as RV sites are just $49.
MacKerricher State Park Campground
Watch seals relaxing on the beach a short walk from your campsite at MacKerricher State Park Campground. With 140 sites, this is a great spot to check out if everything is full at Westport-Union Landing State Beach. MacKerricher is popular with families; during the summer, rangers run a full schedule of campfire programs and other activities. This park doesn't offer hookups, but every site comes with a picnic table and campfire ring. There's a dump station inside the campground as well as bathrooms with hot showers. Sites at MacKerricher start at $35 per night, and many can be reserved online in advance.

The best way to explore Westport-Union Landing State Beach is on foot, and with 3 miles of shoreline to cover, there's plenty to see. Bring your camera and be sure to come for at least one sunset because the rocky shoreline and sea stacks are remarkably photogenic. The park is also a popular spot for surf fishing during the day and net fishing after dark. Even if you don't plan to fish yourself, it's worth the walk to watch the anglers at work.

The only way to get to Westport-Union Landing State Beach is on Highway 1. Take this well-traveled road north from Fort Bragg or south from Leggett and Piercy. If you're coming from farther inland, you can access Highway 1 from Highway 101 or Highway 20.
