Vass is a North Carolina town located in Moore County with a population of less than 1,000 people. A railroad that came through here in the 1800s resulted in Vass's growth. Earlier names included Bynum and Winder before it became known as Vass in 1892. The town was formally incorporated in 1907.

The Seaboard Railway passed through here as a route for resin, turpentine, and lumber produced in the area. One historical residence here is on the National Register of Historic Places is the Leslie-Taylor House. Locals might also refer to it as Maple Lawn. Constructed in 1879, this three-story dwelling features double-pile framing and decorative elements done in the late Victorian style. The clipped gable roof has a trio of Gothic gables featuring ornate sawn bargeboards. There's also a full-width porch out front, complete with a rooftop balcony. The property also features a carriage house and smokehouse.

Check out a variety of different exotic animals at Dunrovin Exotic Animal Rescue behind the Dunrovin Country Store. Free admission is available from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on a daily basis, but donations are also welcome. You can enjoy more than 170 tropical birds, along with tortoises, Patagonian maras, wallabies, Vervet monkeys, and a number of different reptiles.

Head over to Valenti's Italian restaurant for a full-service restaurant with a casual atmosphere. The locals have been eating at this restaurant that's owned and operated by third-generation Italians who relocated from Europe via Long Island since 1996. Pizza and pasta are made fresh with quality ingredients imported from both New York and Italy.

State Parks Near Vass, North Carolina

Cheraw State Park is in northeast South Carolina, not far from the North Carolina border. The 7,362-acre park was founded in 1934. The Civilian Conservation Corps, or CCC, gave it a lot of early attention. Many of the boardwalks and buildings from that time are actually still in place. The modern park is known for two things: a championship-level golf course with 18 holes and being the protected habitat for the red-cockaded woodpecker and other species. Lake Juniper has 360 acres of water and proves crucial to the water wildlife located here.

Jordan Lake State Recreation Area in North Carolina is a 14,000-acre reservoir with nine access spaces. Take advantage of multiple boating ramps, or go hiking on the 14 miles of trails. Wildlife viewing includes ospreys and bald eagles, but you can also just dip into the water to go swimming. The western shore of the reservoir features the Jordan Lake Educational State Forest, and the visitor center has an exhibit hall where you can learn all about this place and its ecology.

Morrow Mountain State Park is in central North Carolina. Surrounded by the Uwharrie Mountains, this park has 4,742 acres. Climbing to the park's highest point, which is only about 935 feet, provides breathtaking views of the lakes, rivers, canyons, and countryside around you. If you want to get on the water, head to the east end of the park for the convergence of Mountain Creek, the Yadkin-Pee Dee River, and Lake Tillery.

National Sites Near Vass, North Carolina

The Booker T. Washington National Monument highlights where the civil rights leader was born. This location in Virginia's Franklin County was where Booker Taliaferro Washington started his life. Born a slave in 1856, he became an influential voice in politics, business, and African American education across the country. Reconstructions and remains of the plantation and farm where he was born show you what it looked like during his childhood.

The Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site is 107 acres of education about both victories and losses during the original war for independence from the British. From 1780 to 1781, it was a supply post for the British. It also acted as a garrison for the Hobkirk's Hill and Camden battles. The area has been refurbished but maintains a historical flavor. Actual artifacts from the battles are housed on display here, so you can see and learn a lot about the country's early history.

The Red Hill Patrick Henry National Memorial is near Brookneal, Virginia. It's where Patrick Henry spent his final years, and it became his resting place after his death. You can visit here to learn about Colonial history and the founding of the nation. The home is now a museum after Henry's great-granddaughter handed it over. Passionate workers have restored it with care and love. A visitor center is available to help you learn about the property before fully exploring it. You can visit Henry's home, a colonial kitchen, his law office, slave quarters, and a barn that was used for curing tobacco. The event calendar here regularly includes special activities on living history days.

National Forests Near Vass, North Carolina

Cherokee National Forest is more than 650,000 acres of preserved space in the eastern region of Tennessee. It adjoins the Great Smoky Mountains National Park along its northwestern edge, and it's actually most of Tennessee's border with North Carolina. Hike a sizeable part of the Appalachian Trail or Big Frog Mountain, or get on the water on either the Ocoee River or one of two big reservoirs. Take shade under deciduous trees that include wild cherry and maple species, and keep your eyes open for white-tailed deer, black bears, or bobcats.

Croatan National Forest is full of pocosins, bogs, salt estuaries, and swamps with sandy peat soils. Indigenous peoples known as the Croatans greeted European colonists here centuries ago as they somehow thrived in a place with deep acidic soil. Bounded by water on three sides, there are nearly 160,000 acres of wooded coastal lands here that include flora and fauna ranging from alligators to giant bald cypress trees.

The Francis Marion National Forest is named for a hero of the Revolutionary War. Find this place north of Charleston on the South Carolina coast. This forest was officially designated in 1936, but it was also hurt badly in 1989 by Hurricane Hugo. Much of the subtropical coniferous forest present now is what's grown since then. Visit this park for mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, boating, and hiking. You can even get in some target shooting at an on-site rifle range or go off-roading with a motorcycle or ATV.

Congaree National Park is south of Vass and about 30 minutes from the South Carolina state capital of Columbia. Named for a Native American tribe who once called this place home, this park features a number of the tallest trees you'll find anywhere on the East Coast. The lumber industry spared this place in the 1800s, and preservationists have cared for it much of the time since. Daytime activities include educational tours, including canoe tours. You can also learn about nocturnal animals on the Owl Prowl tours.

New River Gorge National Park was eons in the making as the river carved out the gorge slowly but surely. Water activities on the river give you a physical perspective of the local terrain unlike any other, but you can also find plenty to do on land, given the 70,000 acres of the countryside along the river as part of the park. The rolling hills on both sides of the water head into Appalachian ridges full of life and beautiful scenery.

Shenandoah National Park has 300 square miles of Blue Ridge Mountain biomes. Skyline Drive is a popular scenic route that heads right through the middle of the park for 100 miles.
