As is often the case in this region, Pahrump was named by the Native American tribe that lived in the area well before any other settlers came. The Southern Paiutes named the area Pah-rimpi, which means “water rock” in reference to the valley’s many artesian wells. Pahrump didn’t have telephone service or paved roads to other areas until the 1960s when interest in the region ballooned as a result of Las Vegas’s growing popularity. Today, Pahrump is a bustling exurb that’s home to nearly 45,000 people and is a home away from home for travelers who want to visit Las Vegas to the east or Death Valley to the west.
