North Canton began in the 1830s as the Village of New Berlin. Its name was changed to North Canton in the early 1900s. William H. Hoover played a major role in the city's development by moving his business to the center of town. Several decades later, his business began making vacuum cleaners and soon became the world's largest manufacturer. The Hoover business lasted for decades until it shut down in 2007. The building was then divided and repurposed into residences and a shopping center.
