New Canada is a small town located in the northeastern corner of Aroostook County in the state of Maine. The town is less than 10 miles south of the Clair Fort Kent Bridge and the Canadian border. This quaint community sits along Route 161, a Maine highway that runs from Fort Fairfield to Allagash, a small town in the North Maine Woods region. New Canada is an incredibly rural area with very few permanent residents. At the time of the latest census, it was home to just 310 people.
New Canada was established in October 1840. At the time, it was referred to as T14 R6 WELS. It was renamed as New Canada Plantation in 1881. It wasn't until the 1970s that the town become known as New Canada. Much of the area is a hub for farming and timber harvesting.
Roughly 1,000 acres of New Canada are part of Maine’s Public Reserved Land. Thousands of cords of wood have been harvested from this land over the last few decades.
