New Canada is a small town located in the northeastern corner of Aroostook County in the state of Maine. The town is less than 10 miles south of the Clair Fort Kent Bridge and the Canadian border. This quaint community sits along Route 161, a Maine highway that runs from Fort Fairfield to Allagash, a small town in the North Maine Woods region. New Canada is an incredibly rural area with very few permanent residents. At the time of the latest census, it was home to just 310 people.
New Canada was established in October 1840. At the time, it was referred to as T14 R6 WELS. It was renamed as New Canada Plantation in 1881. It wasn't until the 1970s that the town become known as New Canada. Much of the area is a hub for farming and timber harvesting.
Roughly 1,000 acres of New Canada are part of Maine’s Public Reserved Land. Thousands of cords of wood have been harvested from this land over the last few decades. The town is also close to the township of North Maine Woods, another of the state's top lumber exporters. Like New Canada's public lands, this area is also a popular spot for hunting and outdoor recreation. The Fish River and Saint John River are two local waterways that run through the nearby town of Fort Kent. These fast-moving rivers are popular spots for fishing and boating.
The area's main attractions include Allagash View Farms, Dean's Den, and Sly Brook Trail Blazers. Nearby outdoor attractions include Eagle Lake, Acadia National Park, Fort Kent, and Wallagrass. The closest shopping center is located on Presque Isle. There's plenty of dining and lodging in nearby Fort Kent, Wallagrass, and Eagle Lake.
Acadian Festival – Held in Madawaska, Maine, this early August festival lasts five days. It boasts a full lineup of Acadian-themed food, music, and entertainment.
Aroostook County Brew & Wine Fest – This event is held at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle every fall. Guests are encouraged to taste all sorts of locally brewed beers and wines.
Nordic Trail Festival – Presque Isle's Nordic Heritage Center hosts this springtime festival. The event includes a full lineup of live music, contests, and Nordic cultural activities.
Maine Whoopie Pie Festival – This event takes place in Piscataquis County's Dover-Foxcroft during the second weekend of September. Sample all varieties of whoopie pies during this one-day event. Enjoy arts, crafts, food vendors, and live music as well as whoopie pie eating contests and other games.
