Manchester is a city in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, about 58 miles from Boston. It is situated on the Merrimack River banks. Derryfield was the original name of Manchester when it was first established in 1752. Samuel Blodgett, a businessman and inventor, gave the city its original name. His goal was to build an industrial center similar to the original Manchester in England. It was given its current name, Manchester, in 1810 and became a city in 1846. Even though Manchester is not the capital, it is known as the “Queen City” because it is the largest in New Hampshire.

The establishment of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company in 1838 marked the single-most-important milestone in the industrial growth of Manchester, New Hampshire. The company later became the world's largest textile manufacturing plant, giving rise to a large textile sector in the city. The company finally shut down in 1936 due to the Great Depression, but the industry eventually recovered, and by the late 20th century, the city had become one of the fastest-growing in the country.

Most of New Hampshire's attraction sites and cultural institutions are in Manchester. One of the best little galleries in the country and an internationally famous art museum, Currier Museum of Art, is located within the city. The New Hampshire Symphony Orchestra and the Opera League of New Hampshire call the Palace Theatre, located in the center of Manchester, home. The city also houses the New Hampshire Institute of Art, which has six galleries with unique exhibits.

Other attraction sites include the Majestic Theatre, the SEE Science Facility, the Massabesic Audubon Center, and the Verizon Wireless Arena. This multipurpose civic center holds various events, including sports, concerts, and fairs. Manchester has several professional sports teams, including the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Fisher Cats, and Manchester Monarchs.
