A sawmill owner named Albert Durham founded Oswego in 1847 and named the town after Oswego, New York. Oswego's convenient location on the Willamette River made it ideal for shipping. The railroad came to town in 1886, linking Oswego with Portland and bringing an initial boom. The iron industry boomed in Oswego for many years, but the railroad that had initially brought prosperity to the area ultimately led to the decrease of the iron industry locally as customers were able to buy higher-grade iron elsewhere more easily. In the wake of the iron industry, Oswego's citizens turned to land development to make the area more attractive to residential buyers. Today, over 40,000 people live in this city that’s now considered to be a suburb of Portland.
