Harrisville, Michigan was first named Davison's Mill in 1854. The original name came from Crosier Davison, who bought the land and water power rights to the town's area. Soon after, though, Benjamin Harris and his two sons, Levi and Henry, bought out Davison and his business partner, Simeon Holden. In 1857, Harris renamed the town Harrisville with the founding of a post office on September 16 of the same year. Later on, the town's land was resold again to George L. Colwell and Company, and then, the land was divided into sellable sections for residential and commercial use in 1870. Residents moved to the area and it was dubbed a village in 1887, although it wasn't until 1905 that Harrisville became an official city.
Today, Harrisville is one of the 10 smallest cities in Michigan by population. However, its location on the shore of Lake Huron makes it a place home to beautiful water views. The city also houses an official Michigan Department of Natural Resources Harbor of Refuge, a harbor designated by the United States Coast Guard for recreational boaters who seek refuge. Visitors can see the refuge for themselves, and the harbor is a known destination for salmon and trout fishing.
Campers who come to Harrisville often stay at Harrisville State Park, which is known for its entirely wooded campground that sits along the beaches of Lake Huron. This beach and the other beaches in Harrisville have been recognized as some of the top 10 beaches in Michigan. A lot of visitors enjoy checking out nearby Huron National Forest too, which is home to nearly 330 miles of hiking and biking trails. Other popular activities in the forest include seasonal hunting, skiing, and swimming.
