Harrisville, Michigan was first named Davison's Mill in 1854. The original name came from Crosier Davison, who bought the land and water power rights to the town's area. Soon after, though, Benjamin Harris and his two sons, Levi and Henry, bought out Davison and his business partner, Simeon Holden. In 1857, Harris renamed the town Harrisville with the founding of a post office on September 16 of the same year. Later on, the town's land was resold again to George L. Colwell and Company, and then, the land was divided into sellable sections for residential and commercial use in 1870. Residents moved to the area and it was dubbed a village in 1887, although it wasn't until 1905 that Harrisville became an official city.
