The first inhabitants of Glendale were the Hohokam, who built canals to support their farming culture. The Hohokam abandoned their settlements by the 14th century, and the land was subsequently taken over by the O'odham and Piipaash, who used the area for farming and gathering wild foods.
The first Europeans to settle in the area were a group of Spanish farmers in the late 18th century. They established a small community along the Salt River called San Antonio del Norte. However, the settlers were forced to abandon their homes when the river flooded in the early 1800s.
In 1859, John T. Alsap and William H. Bartlett bought a parcel of land along the river and laid out the town of Glendale. The town was home to several large resorts, including the Hotel Glendale and the Glendale Inn. The Great Depression hit Glendale hard, but the town began to rebound in the 1940s. The construction of the Grand Coulee Dam in the 1950s brought new jobs and growth to the area.
Today, Glendale is a thriving city extending 30.60 square miles with a population of over 250,000. It is home to several major corporations, including Luke Air Force Base, and is a popular destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment.
