Explore East Hemet, California in an RVshare Rental

The Cahuilla Indian tribe initially inhabited the East Hemet area. In the 1800s, it was acquired by the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia and renamed Ranch San Jacinto. Later in 1842, the Mexican government broke up the missions and awarded the land to California ranchero, politician, and soldier José Antonio Estudillo.

In 1887, American settlers introduced the idea of the first railroad in San Jacinto Valley. The purpose of the railway was to connect Hemet with South San Jacinto land buyers. However, the railroad headed to Mayberry's townsite and went north a mile and a half to San Jacinto.

More developments came with the railroad, including the facilitation of the construction of the Great Hemet Dam. The successful completion of the dam brought about economic and social prosperity that fueled the growth of Hemet. As a result, the Hotel Mayberry, a three-story brick building, was constructed.

In 1936, during the Hemet Turkey Show, Hemet was named the 46th Agricultural District and home to the Ryan School of Aeronautics. Presently, East Hemet is an attractive destination for younger families looking for an alternative to the urbanized areas of Southern California. East Hemet offers restaurants, entertainment centers, and national and state parks. You can visit the Lake Perris State Recreation Area or the Death Valley National Park for camping. A hike through forests like Cleveland National and Angeles National Forest lets you experience beautiful mountain ranges, thick forests, valleys, rivers, and springs.
