Explore Delray Beach, Florida in an RVshare RV Rental

Several indigenous groups, including the Jaega and Tequesta, lived or moved through the area that would become Delray Beach long before Europeans arrived. The United States Life-Saving Service, which began in 1848 and ultimately became the United States Coast Guard, built Houses of Refuge in Florida to assist shipwrecked sailors. Around 1884, a group of African American settlers purchased land near the Orange Grove House of Refuge and began farming. A decade later, the community had grown to have a school. A Republican U.S. congressman began selling plots west of this settlement in the hopes of creating another successful farming community. This town became known as Linton, which was soon included as a stop on the Florida East Coast Railway.

Linton was quickly successful enough to have a post office and store. After a particularly hard winter, many settlers left to find success elsewhere. Linton's name was then changed to Delray in the hopes of leaving its bad reputation and misfortune behind. Settlers from The Bahamas arrived soon after, increasing the local population to around 900 by 1901. It was incorporated as the town of Delray Beach in 1923 and then as a city in 1927. Delray Beach gained a reputation for surfing in the 1960s. The city is bordered by several beaches, including Highland Beach and Boynton Beach.
