Carefree, Arizona is a relatively new town that was incorporated in the 1980s. However, the area has a long history dating back to the prehistoric Hohokam people. The Hohokam were a sedentary farming culture that lived in the area for centuries. They were known for their irrigation systems and their pottery. The Hohokam people disappeared around 1450 A.D., and the Paiute people inhabited the area until the late 19th century.
In the mid-1950s, business partners K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington envisioned the area as a master-planned community, and began selling land and building homes. Carefree was incorporated in 1984 to prevent it being annexed by nearby Scottsdale.
