Castle Clinton National Monument

Soldiers initially constructed New York Harbor's Castle Clinton National Monument to stop Great Britain from invading the country in 1812. The military gave the facility to New York City in 1823 and it was used as an entertainment complex. In 1855, the location became an immigration center welcoming over 8 million people during the next 34 years. Then, the area became the New York City Aquarium for the next 44 years until the aquarium moved to Coney Island. In 1975, it became a national monument and was restored to its former glory.
