The third major of men's professional golf held each calendar year, the U.S. Open stands as the nation’s premier open championship. Established in 1895, the tournament's inaugural event saw Horace Rawlins triumph over Willie Dunn by two strokes at Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island. Since then, the U.S. Open has been held annually, with the only exceptions occurring during World War I (1917–1918) and World War II (1942–1945).

A rotating schedule of some of the top courses in the country hosts the U.S. Open. For 2025, the tournament will take place at the Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. Oakmont has the distinction of playing host to the most U.S. Opens; 2025 will mark the 10th tournament for the course. The best of the best PGA players compete for the right to hold up the U.S. Open Trophy. Past winners include a veritable who's who of the top names in golf history: Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Tiger Woods, and Brooks Koepka.

ACTIVITIES & ENTERTAINMENT

The U.S. Open consists of four 18-hole rounds of championship-level golf, with the main tournament played from Thursday through Sunday. In the first two rounds, players attempt to make the cut for the third and fourth rounds; those who miss the predetermined cut line get eliminated. For 2025, the cut line is established as the top 60 low scorers. If there is a tie after 72 holes, the golfers will face off on a two-hole aggregate playoff to determine the winner. Practice rounds take place the first three days of U.S. Open week, Mondays through Wednesdays.

ON-SITE AMENITIES

The ticket tier or package you purchase determines your access level and the amenities you'll get to enjoy at the event. With a Gallery ticket, you can walk the course every day of the week and sit in the public grandstands. There will also be concession stands selling food and drinks.

Reserved grandstand access offers all-inclusive food and non-alcoholic beverages and grandstand seating with private views in addition to all the benefits of a Gallery ticket.

The Trophy Club gives you all the access of the Gallery ticket but also includes a climate-controlled facility, upgraded food and beverages, and live television coverage. Pricier ticket packages include the Champions Pavilion and the 1895 Club. Check the U.S. Open homepage for updates on any scheduled fan events and for other information. Note that some prohibited items include backpacks, selfie sticks, signs, and noise-producing devices. As the tournament takes place in early summer, it can get hot. Prepare for the heat by drinking lots of water, applying sunscreen, and wearing comfortable clothing. Also be prepared to do a lot of walking from hole to hole if you want to follow certain players.
