Hatch Point Campground


The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for 1 in every 10 acres of land in the U.S.

President Harry S. Truman formed the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in 1946 as a way to maintain the health of public lands for many generations to come. The government agency currently oversees about a tenth of the land in the U.S. Hatch Point Campground is one of many Bureau of Land Management campgrounds found in Utah. As a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) area, it has campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis and charges a fee of only $20 per night. Each campsite features a picnic table, a fire ring with a grill and access to a vault toilet. There are 10 campsites in total at Hatch Point Campground, and each can accommodate up to 10 people and two vehicles per night. Attractions near Hatch Point Campground include Dead Horse Point State Park, an hour and 45 minutes to the northwest. Arches National Park is an hour and 15 minutes to the northeast, and Canyonlands National Park is an hour and 15 minutes to the southwest. Hatch Point Campground is also close to the Green and Colorado Rivers.

White Rim Overlook Trail

To reach the top of White Rim Overlook, take the White Rim Overlook Trail, two hours southwest of Hatch Point Campground, which features canyon views and lots of vegetation in a desert environment. It is located in Canyonlands National Park. Length: 1.8 miles Intensity: Easy

Murphy Trail

Also located in Canyonlands National Park, Murphy Trail is a loop trail popular with hikers. There is a restroom found at the trailhead, and there are options for shorter hikes within the full-loop trail system. Length: 10.1 miles Intensity: Difficult

Mesa Arch Trail

The short Mesa Arch Trail takes hikers right to Mesa Arch, a naturally formed rock arch that is highly popular with photographers. This trail is also found in Canyonlands National Park. Length: 0.5 miles Intensity: Easy

Fishing and BoatingFishing and Boating

If you'd like to go fishing near Hatch Point Campground, consider visiting the Green or Colorado River. In the Colorado River, you'll likely find largemouth bass and smallmouth bass, striped bass, black crappie, and walleye. Meanwhile, the Green River is known for being a top fly-fishing destination, and it is home to species such as rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout. You can also go boating on either of these rivers easily with a nonmotorized boat, such as a kayak. Green River State Park, two hours northwest of Hatch Point Campground, offers a great launching place for floating the Green River, and there is a launch area in Moab for floating the Colorado River. For both rivers, boaters are required to obtain a boating permit and adhere to the National Park Service guidelines on floating the two rivers as there are many areas not permitted for human use in order to preserve the environment.

Picnicking

There are plenty of popular picnic areas to check out near Hatch Point Campground, such as Pack Creek Picnic Area outside of Moab. This picnic site, an hour northeast of Hatch Point Campground, features tables and benches. Plus, there is enough seating space for larger groups. If you'd like to visit Arches National Park, you can also check out the Fisher Towers Picnic Area, which features picnic tables, interpretive signs and a hiking area around rock formations.

StargazingStargazing

Hatch Point Campground offers great opportunities for stargazing since it is located on top of a high mesa in a remote area. This area also frequently experiences dry, clear nights, so there are few clouds to obstruct night sky views. However, it is important to remember that the nights are generally chilly, and stargazers should pack warm layers to use while stargazing at the campground.

You can certainly go BLM RV camping at Hatch Point Campground if you would like. However, keep in mind that this is a primitive campground that does not offer any hookups, and potable water may not always be available. If you would like to go camping with electricity and water, check out a campground like Sun Outdoors Arches Gateway, an RV resort with full hookups, free Wi-Fi, a hot tub, a dog park and pull-through campsites. It is located a little over an hour northeast of Hatch Point Campground. You can also check out Kayenta Campground at Dead Horse Point State Park, which provides electrical hookups and has a dump station, though it does not have any water hookups.

If you're researching "BLM camping near me," consider staying at either Hatch Point Campground or another nearby campground overseen by the Bureau of Land Management. One great option is Creek Pasture Campground, which has a picnic area and organized campsites large enough for most RVs. This Bureau of Land Management free camping site, which is an hour and 10 minutes south of Hatch Point Campground, provides spaces without reservations, although it does not offer any hookups for campers.

Planning your Hatch Point Campground BLM trip

If you're planning to stay at Hatch Point Campground or another BLM campground, be sure to pack your own water for your stay since water is not usually available at these campgrounds. You should also bring firewood and fire starters if you would like to have a campfire, and you may want to check the weather forecast to see what types of clothing will be appropriate to pack. You can also bring and use a generator if it does not create excess noise for more than an hour at a time. Staying at a BLM campground means you will be foregoing many amenities like electricity and water, but it also means you will be much closer to points of interest like hiking trails.
