The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for 1 in every 10 acres of land in the U.S.

Pit River Campground is located next to California’s Pit River in Alturas. This is a lovely campground that features picnic tables, metal fire rings, and barbecue pits. They have a kayak launch ramp and a fishing pier near the campsites so that it is easy to take advantage of the river’s fishing opportunities. The Bureau of Land Management operates public lands such as Pit River Campground on behalf of American citizens. Their mission is to maintain these lands for everyone’s enjoyment now and in the future. Bureau of Land Management camping at this location places you near Modoc National Wildlife Refuge as well as the Modoc National Forest, where you’ll find lakes, wildlife, and hiking trails to explore. Lassen Volcanic National Park is only 121 miles from the campground, and Crater Lake National Park is 143 miles away.

The Summit Trail

This trail leads you from the Pepperdine Trailhead to Patterson Lake. You’ll discover incredible views along the way, and the lake at the end of the trail is ideal for trout fishing. Length: 13.5 miles Intensity: Hard

Pine Creek Trail

This trail provides you with lovely views, several ponds, and a lake. It runs alongside a fast-running stream and through a forested canopy. Length: 5.1 mile Intensity: Moderate

Devil’s Garden Loop

This trail leads you down into a narrow valley and crosses a creek. It then goes back up in elevation. Length: 1.7 miles Intensity: Moderate

Milk Peak Trail

The terrain along this trail ranges from rocky ground to a lovely pine forest. Your hike is rewarded with stunning views of Alturas and Surprise Valley. Length: 14.5 miles Intensity: Hard

Fishing and BoatingFishing and Boating

Pit River is known for its 12- to 16-inch-long rainbow trout. The day-use areas of Pit River Campground are perfect for fly fishing. You’ll find an accessible kayak and raft launch along with a fishing pier at the campground.

The Modoc National Wildlife Refuge is the best place for viewing wildlife near Pit River Campground. Here, you’ll discover a variety of birds and ducks, including tundra swans, sandhill cranes, and snow geese. Other wildlife you can expect to see are wild horses, elk, mule deer, and antelope.

Picnicking

Each of the Pit River Campground sites has a picnic table and a fire ring. Another good spot for picnicking is the nearby Lily Lake Picnic Site. It’s a beautiful place to enjoy a meal within the Modoc National Forest.

When searching for “BLM camping near me,” you’ll discover that Pit River Campground is a small campground with eight sites available for RV camping. Each site is $8 per night and comes with a picnic table, metal fire ring, and a barbecue. Two of the sites are wheelchair accessible. Other amenities include a kayak launch ramp and an accessible fishing pier. Be aware that there are no full hookups available, and it doesn’t offer a dump station.

Among the Bureau of Land Management free camping, you’ll find that the Duncan Reservoir South Site offers dispersed camping in a primitive setting with no facilities. There is a gravel and dirt boat ramp available, and there’s room to turn a small travel trailer around. Dogs are allowed, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets and removing their trash when they leave.

Planning your Pit River Campground BLM trip

Campers at Pit River Campground are limited to a 14-day stay. Group sites are $12 per night. The campground doesn’t take reservations, and you won't have an on-site host available, but you can enjoy the boat launch and fishing pier for free. The weather in this area of California includes dry summers with daytime average temperatures in the high 70s to the high 80s. Temperatures can drop into the 40s at night. Spring and fall are cooler with daily highs in the 50s and 60s. Evenings are typically in the 40s. The winter months are the coldest with highs in the 40s and lows dropping into the teens. Be sure to pack layered clothing to accommodate the fluctuating temperatures. A raincoat will be handy for warmer months, but you’ll need a heavy coat for winter visits. Cooking is easily handled at the campground with each site providing a fire ring for campfire snacks and a barbecue for meats and vegetables. You’ll have your own picnic table, as well as access to additional tables in the day-use areas. If you forget anything, there are a few markets in Alturas offering groceries. Bureau of Land Management campgrounds need to be preserved for future enjoyment. This is best done by making sure you "Leave No Trace" behind. Everyone has to clean up after themselves. Before hitting the road, do a quick inspection of your campsite to make sure you aren't forgetting any trash or equipment. Avoid causing harm to any of the wildlife or the natural surroundings while visiting.
