Canyon Overlook Picnic Area

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for 1 in every 10 acres of land in the U.S.

Bureau of Land Management (BLM) sites, which are areas of unincorporated lands, are often quiet and secluded, making them excellent locations for hiking, boating, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Many sites offer BLM RV camping and free or low-cost primitive and dispersed camping. Each site varies in what amenities and recreation opportunities it offers. To find out which sites are designed for camping, search for “BLM camping near me.”

The Canyon Overlook Picnic Area is located along the Black Hills Back Country Byway, which is itself located in southeastern Arizona between the towns of Safford and Clifton. The area is rugged and secluded, ensuring a relatively quiet day or camping trip for any visitors. There are also several points of interest nearby, including the Old Safford Bridge. The picnic area is an excellent spot to stop for lunch. It offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the Gila River. Saguaro National Park is about 125 miles west of the Canyon Overlook Picnic Area.

Planning your Canyon Overlook Picnic Area BLM trip

The Canyon Overlook Picnic Area and the Black Hills Back Country Byway are both beautiful, natural places to explore the Arizona landscape. It is important, however, to remember that you’re traveling through a desert, and dehydration and exposure are risks. The picnic area and the byway are both relatively remote, so plan ahead and take any supplies, including plenty of water, that you may need.

Temperatures in the area during the summer often exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, so most visitors choose to enjoy the area during the cooler winter, fall, and spring months, when temperatures during the day are relatively mild. Nighttime temperatures, however, can become very cold, even during the summer. Temperatures below freezing during the winter are common. If you’re visiting during the colder months, pack and dress for cold weather.

The drive to the Canyon Overlook Picnic Area from the Black Hills Back Country Byway is narrow and rugged. Keep an eye out for other vehicles and give way to uphill traffic. All-terrain or four-wheel-drive vehicles are required for most of the side roads, and the byway should not be traversed in an RV or in any vehicle or vehicle-and-trailer combination exceeding 20 feet in length.

Most Bureau of Land Management camping sites allow for a 14-day camp stay within a 28-day period, but it’s always best to call ahead and check. Since most sites don’t take reservations, it’s also a good idea to ensure that the area is open and has plenty of room before you start your adventure. Leave No Trace Leaf

Natural areas and Bureau of Land Management campgrounds are fragile, and it’s up to visitors to help preserve them by practicing Leave No Trace policies. Dispose of all your trash properly. If there are no trash facilities, pack out your trash with you. Only make fires in designated fire pits or fire rings when the danger of the flames spreading is low. This caution is especially important in dry areas like Arizona. Try not to disturb the local wildlife or the landscape, and never take any animals or plants home with you.
