This recreational area covers over 2,842 acres of land in Vermilion County, Illinois, near the cities of Danville, Oakwood, and Tilton. Kickapoo features nearly 35 miles of hiking trails and 228 acres of lakes. This location offers plenty of recreational activities, including mountain biking, canoeing, fishing, and camping. Kickapoo State Park was the first park in the country to be located on a strip-mining site. Whether you like to boat on the lake or explore the numerous trails, Kickapoo is a great place for an RV trip.

Kickapoo State Park Campground

At Kickapoo State Park, there are two campgrounds designated for trailer and tent camping. This campground has 184 sites, with half of them offering electrical hookups. For your RV, there is also a dump station at the campground. At this location, you can only stay for 14 days out of every 30. D&W Lake Camping and RV Park

If you are looking for a resort-style campground, you will want to stay at D&W Lake Camping and RV Park in Champaign. You can enjoy swimming pools, tennis courts, and golf courses within a short distance from this location. When you book at this campground, your site will have a full hookup. If you need anything for your trip, there is a convenience store located near the property. The basic sites are $27.50 per day. For a premium site with full hookups, you can expect to pay $35 per day.

Prairie Pines RV Campground

Prairie Pines RV Campground is a short drive from Kickapoo State Park. This campground features 95 lots that have sewage, electric, and water hookups. There are laundry facilities, showers, and an ADA-accessible restroom. Prairie Pines is open throughout the year. However, water is not available during the winter months. There is a two-week limit at the sites. If you want to book a space for your RV, the campground fees are about $26.50 per day.

Kickapoo State Park

Inside Kickapoo State Park

Whether you love wildlife or want to hike the trails, you can find plenty of things to do at Kickapoo. The mined land is now home to a forest of cottonwood, ash, and wild cherry trees. Kickapoo's waters make a perfect setting for boating or fishing. This site is also one of the few state parks in Illinois that allows scuba diving. The Middle Fork portion of the Vermilion River runs through the park, and it is a great place to break out the kayak or canoe. 

Outside Kickapoo State Park

When you are ready to head back into town, you can enjoy plenty of restaurants catering to your taste buds. The shops and entertainment options provide hours of fun outside of the state park. With so much to do in the Danville-Oakwood area, you might not want to leave.

Vermilion County War Museum

This museum is housed in the former Carnegie Library, and it contains over 25,000 artifacts and memorabilia. Some of the pieces date back to the Revolutionary War. You can even see the most recent war artifacts from Operation Iraqi Freedom. The museum is open to the public, but you can request a private tour of the building.

Lake Vermilion County Park

Lake Vermilion is a 1,000-acre reservoir that was created for the local water supply. Today, it is used for recreation and fishing purposes. This lake is 3 miles long, and it is just outside of Danville. You can fish the waters for catfish, crappie, tiger muskie, bass, and walleye.

Fithian House

This historic house was built for William Fithian. He was a physician and politician who served in the Illinois Senate and House of Representatives. Fithian was also a close friend of Abraham Lincoln. Today, the house is part of the Vermilion County Museum. While you are there, you can learn more about the local history of the area.

How to Get to
Kickapoo State Park

Kickapoo State Park is about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Chicago. From Interstate 74W, you need to take Exit 210. Continue to drive for 1 mile to the stoplight. You will turn left at the light and travel 2 miles north. At the Kickapoo Park sign, you want to make a left. 

Entering Kickapoo State Park

The park is open throughout the year. However, visitors to the campgrounds must leave by 10:00 p.m. There is no entrance fee for the park, but you will have to pay if you plan to spend the night at the campground.
