In the 1840s, the Texas Republic gave a land grant to Texas Emigration and Land Company to bring 600 families to settle in the area that is now Lewisville. John and Augustus King were among the first to arrive. While the first town developed near the railroad tracks, flooding caused residents to move homes uphill to the current location of Lewisville. The city was not incorporated until March 16, 1925. By 1970, about 9,200 people lived in Lewisville.
