Despite its traditional old town feel, Coral Springs, Florida, is a relatively new town founded in 1963. Prior to becoming a city, the area that would become Coral Springs was filled with farms and cattle.
The town was founded by local Fort Lauderdale industrialists James S. Hunt and Joe Travella. In fact, the town was named for their business, Coral Ridge Properties. The initial purchase of land was 3,860 acres, which provided plenty of area for the town to grow into the small city it is today.
From a design perspective, James S. Hunt and Joe Travella had strict requirements when it came to the overall aesthetic. As the town grew, a covered bridge was added that replicates a 20th-century style bridge. When the bridge was new, late-night host, Johnny Carson, attended the city's first land sale BBQ celebration. The event was successful, and Carson himself purchased a plot of land.
The first mayor of Coral Springs was Harry W. Wilson, and he served two terms in office. The police station that would serve the city early on during his administration eventually became the Coral Springs Museum of History site.
Today, Coral Springs is a city with a population of 134,394 people and exists on about 20,000 acres of land. The area has 19 public schools, a large mall, and several shopping centers.
