Explore Three Rivers, Texas in an RVshare RV Rental

Three Rivers is an old town in the southern part of Texas, at the State Highway 72 and US Highway 281 intersection. It's between San Antonio and Corpus Christi at the shallow basin where the Atascosa, Nueces, and Frio rivers meet. The first known inhabitant of the area was Mrs. Annie Hamilton of Cuero. Charles R. Tips later came to the area. Previously, the area was known as Hamiltonburg. In 1913, Mrs. Hamilton paid the San Antonio, Uvalde, and Gulf Railroad to establish a station on her land. Charles R. Tips organized a townsite company and made the first land sale during the same period.

The residents asked for the area's name change since most of their mail ended up in Hamilton, Texas. Charles suggested that they name the city after its location, Three Rivers, and the post office department approved. One of the most significant occurrences in this area was the discovery of natural gas. This led to the construction of a small refinery that later grew into a Diamond Shamrock refinery and employed many locals. The town also developed one of the first glass factories in Texas after discovering Quartzone sand in the northern part of Three Rivers. It captured most of the Texas glassware market before its closure in 1938.

Three Rivers got incorporated in 1926. Today, it is a prosperous community with about 2,000 people. It's still a farming, oil-producing, ranching town. One frequently visited attraction in the area is the Longhorn Museum for those who want to dive deeper into the area's history. There are several restaurants serving Mexican cuisine and other fare. Visitors can purchase souvenirs at the Goodie Box Gifts & Antiques Co-Op.
