Explore Rome, Georgia, in an RVshare RV Rental

Founded in 1834, Rome, Georgia has had a very eventful history. Early Europeans were drawn to the area because of the seven hills with rivers running between them, reminding the settlers of Rome, Italy. The location of the rivers allowed this city to become a thriving market and trading place. The founding fathers were primarily veterans of the War of 1812 and included Col. Daniel R. Mitchell, Col. Zacharia Hargrove, Maj. Phillip Hemphill, Col. William Smith, and John Lumpkin. In the beginning, the city’s primary goal was to meet the needs of the new cotton-based economy.

In 1863, the Civil War reached the town. By October 1863, Rome had built three forts to protect the city. These forts, named after Romans, were Fort Attaway, Fort Norton, and Fort Stovall. Even with these forts, Rome was captured in May 1864 by Union General Jefferson C. Davis. With fear of Sherman’s Special Field Orders No. 120, the Union forces demolished the forts, iron works, and rail lines before leaving the area in late 1864.

Over the years, Rome has suffered through some serious flooding issues due to its riverside location. It was not until the 1890s that flood measures such as river levees and raising the height of Broad Street were put into place. Broad Street was raised 15 feet, covering the original entrances and ground-level floors.

Currently, Rome, Georgia has a population of over 38,000. The city offers many museums, including the Chieftains Museum and Major Ridge Home and the Oak Hill and the Martha Berry Museum. Other must-see attractions include Jackson Hill, Marshall Forest, and Blossom Hill.
